Two men riding a motorcycle were killed after it collided with a covered van in front of Xinxian Restaurant on the capital's Airport Road on Thursday morning.

The deceased were identified as Arifur Rahman, 40, and Falu, 55. Both worked at scrap shops in Postogola.

The accident occurred around 10am. Falu died at the scene, while Arifur succumbed to his injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

Abul Hasan, a tea stall owner who helped take Arifur to the hospital, said a private car first collided head-on with a covered van in front of the restaurant. A motorcycle then crashed into the same covered van.

One of the motorcyclists died on the spot, while the other, identified as Arifur, was taken to DMCH by police in critical condition, he said.

Fazle Rabbi, a scrap dealer from Postogola, said Arifur worked at his shop, Mitu Enterprise, while Falu was employed at a neighbouring scrap shop.

The two were heading to Tongi in Gazipur to buy scrap materials when the accident occurred, Rabbi said, adding that he learned about the incident over the phone.

Arifur was the son of Awal Molla and hailed from Bedbaria village in Bera upazila of Pabna. He lived in Konapara, Demra, and is survived by two sons and a daughter.

Further details about Falu were not immediately available.

Airport Police Station Sub-Inspector Manik Mahmud confirmed that the motorcycle collided with a covered van in front of Xinjian Restaurant, leaving one person dead at the scene and another dead at the hospital.

The covered van's driver also sustained minor injuries. Police seized both the covered van and the motorcycle.
