A 15-year-old schoolgirl who was allegedly harassed by her headmaster died yesterday after poisoning herself with insecticide.
Sathi Akter, a class ten student of Charmuguria Girls' High School in Madaripur district, was reportedly summoned before headmaster Nuru on Saturday afternoon after another student had lodged a complaint against her.
According to sources, the headmaster beat up Sathi in front of other students.
After the incident, Sathi went to a local shop to buy Furadon - a brand of insecticide - and became critically ill after taking it.
Sathi told her auntie that she had ingested the substance as she could “no longer bear the torture by the headmaster”.
She was rushed to Madaripur Sadar Hospital, from where she was transferred first to Faridpur Sadar Hospital and then to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital as her condition deteriorated.
Sathi, the daughter of Iqbal Bepari from Patildi village under Sadar upazila, died at DMCH on Thursday morning.
After the news of the schoolgirl’s death spread through the village, locals became agitated and brought out a protest rally.
The headmaster could not be reached by phone.
“We are trying to arrest the headmaster,” Suman Dev, additional superintendent of police, said on Thursday.
A case was still to be filed over the incident.
