The Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) has issued a public advisory following a sharp rise in Covid-19 cases in the past month.
Data from IEDCR’s National Influenza Surveillance and PHOC show that out of 1,409 samples collected in May 2025 from suspected Covid-19 patients, 134 tested positive — reflecting a 9.51% positivity rate, the highest since January 2023.
IEDCR also noted that infection rates had previously exceeded 1.5% during May–August 2023 and again from January–August 2024.
Genome sequencing of recent positive samples confirmed the presence of the Omicron BA.2.86 variant, which has been detected in Bangladesh before.
In light of the current situation, IEDCR recommends the public to adhere to the following safety measures:
- Wear a mask.
- Avoid crowds as much as possible.
- Wash hands frequently (with soap and water or hand sanitizer).
- If you have a fever, cough, or breathing difficulties, stay away from healthy individuals and consult a doctor if necessary.
- Practice proper cough etiquette: Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your elbow when coughing or sneezing, dispose of used tissues in covered bins, and wash your hands immediately.
