Covid-19: Bangladesh records 6 deaths, 276 new cases

Bangladesh recorded six new deaths and 276 fresh cases from the coronavirus in the last 24 hours on Tuesday.

The latest development has taken the death toll of the country to 27, 834 and the total caseload to 1,568,257, according to a statement of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Meanwhile, 440 people recovered from the disease in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of recoveries to 1,532,180.

As many as 19,184 samples were tested across the country, yielding a daily positivity rate of 1.44%.

The overall infection rate in the country stands at 15.28%.

In terms of deaths per division, Dhaka, Barisal, Rangpur and Mymensingh recorded zero deaths while Chittagong and Khulna each counted two fatalities followed by Rajshahi and Sylhet with one death each.

Despite zero fatalities, Dhaka still logged the highest number of 208 cases followed by Chittagong with 24 cases.

Meanwhile, Rangpur division tallied 12 cases, Rajshahi 11 cases, Khulna 13, Mymensingh five and Sylhet three cases. Barisal division logged zero infections for the day.

The latest count has put the recovery rate of the country at 97.7% while the mortality rate still remains 1.77%.

Around 40.28 million people in the country have received their first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine. Of them, some 20.59 million have taken both doses, according to DGHS data on Sunday.

Bangladesh reported its first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a strain of coronavirus later named Sars-CoV-2, on March 8 last year. The first death was reported 10 days later.

The fast-spreading coronavirus has so far claimed over 4.9 million lives and infected more than 244 million people throughout the world, according to Worldometer.

More than 221 million people have recovered from the disease, which has affected 223 countries and territories across the planet.
