Covid-19: Single daily death logged after 60 days

323 new cases reported at a positivity rate of 1.97%

Bangladesh on Wednesday recorded a single Covid-19 death after two months.

The single death of a male patient, aged between 51 and 60 years, was recorded in Sylhet division. He passed away at a government facility while undergoing treatment. 

The latest addition took the country's death toll to 29,097.

Last time, it was on January 8 when the country logged a single death from Covid-19 in a 24-hour period. 

Bangladesh recorded zero deaths from Covid-19 on December 9 last year, data compiled by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) show.

Since December last year, the country confirmed single deaths in a 24-hour period of time on December 10, 19, 21, 22, 24, 25, 27, 28, 29 and on January 2, 7 and 8.

This year, Bangladesh recorded double digit deaths on January 13 for the first time with 12 deaths and the trend continued for nearly two months since then.

In the first nine days in March, deaths remained in single digits except for March 5, when 13 deaths were reported.

The death toll from Covid-19 in the current month are - eight deaths each on March 1 and 2, five deaths on March 3, six deaths on March 4, thirteen deaths on March 5, eight deaths on March 6, four deaths on March 7 and eight deaths on March 8.

The seven-day moving average of single-day deaths in Bangladesh was 6.2 on Wednesday.

The health authorities also reported 323 coronavirus infections in the 24-hour period.

The positivity rate came down to 1.97% during the same period as 16,225 samples were tested across the country.

The latest additions took the country's total caseload to 19,48,471.

A total of 2,824 people recovered from Covid-19 in the meantime, taking the total recovery to 18,52,770.

On Tuesday, the health authorities reported seven deaths from coronavirus with 446 new infections.

Meanwhile, the government lifted the Covid-19 restrictions, imposed in January amid Omicron fears, from February 22. However, people will have to continue wearing masks outdoors as per the latest decision.

On January 28, Bangladesh logged its earlier highest daily positivity rate at 33.37%,reporting 15,440 cases and 20 deaths.

Besides, the country registered the highest daily caseload of 16,230 on July 28 last year, while the highest number of daily fatalities was 264 on August 10 last year.

Bangladesh reported its first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a strain of coronavirus later named Sars-CoV-2, on March 8, 2020. The first death was reported 10 days later.

A large number of the population has also been vaccinated, with the country crossing the landmark of administering 100 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines on December 1, nearly 10 months after launching a nationwide campaign.

The fast-spreading coronavirus has so far claimed over six million lives and infected over 450 million people throughout the world, according to Worldometer.

More than 384 million people have recovered from the disease, which has affected 223 countries and territories across the planet.
