Bangladesh logs 2,231 Covid cases in a day, infection rate at 8.53%
Three deaths reported, taking the total fatality to 28,105

Bangladesh logged 2,231 new coronavirus infections in the 24 hours to Monday morning, up from 1,491 cases the previous day.
The country last recorded 2,325 cases on September 10, last year along with 38 deaths in 24 hours.
As many as 26,143 samples were tested across the labs in the country for a test positivity rate of 8.53%, according to data released by the Directorate General of Health Services.
The country’s daily infection rate has been over 5% for four days in a row now.
The health authorities also reported three new deaths in the 24-hour period.
The recovery rate stood at 97.19% with the recovery of 208 more patients during the 24-hour period.
The latest additions took the country’s total fatalities to 28,105, total caseload to 1,595,931, and the total number of recoveries to 1,551,113.
According to the official data, the country’s overall Covid-19 mortality rate until Monday morning stood at 1.76% and the overall positivity lowered to 13.64%.
The seven-day moving average of single-day deaths in Bangladesh was 3.42 on Monday.
Of the new patients, Dhaka logged 1,908 cases, the highest among the divisions.
Though the deaths remained relatively low, the daily cases remained mostly over 250 since December 13, according to data provided by the DGHS.
The country reported the highest number of daily fatalities of 264 on August 5 this year, while the highest daily caseload was 16,230 on July 28 this year.
Bangladesh officially began the dispensation of booster doses of a Covid-19 vaccine on a limited scale from December 26.
Bangladesh reported its first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a strain of coronavirus later named Sars-CoV-2, on March 8, 2020. The first death was reported 10 days later.
Bangladesh lifted nationwide lockdown on August 11. However, experts have warned against complacency as many countries are seeing a surge in infections yet again.

Meanwhile, the discovery of a new variant, Omicron, has triggered a global alarm.
Called B.1.1.529, Omicron is the fifth variant of concern designated by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The fast-spreading coronavirus has so far claimed over 5.5 million lives and infected over 308 million people throughout the world, according to Worldometer.
