The Omicron variant of the coronavirus is gradually replacing the Delta variant in Bangladesh, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
Omicron is in the community transmission phase, its spokesperson Prof Nazmul Islam said during Sunday’s regular bulletin.
He said 73% of people with Omicron have runny noses, 68% have headaches, 64% have fatigue, 60% have sneezing, 60% have sore throats and 44% have coughs.
One should seek medical advice in any case, he suggested.
“If people keep disregarding hygiene rules, the number of Covid-19 patients will keep increasing, overwhelming the healthcare system”, Prof Islam said.
He also said the daily infection rate has been seeing an increase since late December 2021. It was 17.82% on January 16 and then 28.02% on Saturday, he mentioned.
The number of patients in hospitals is growing, the official said, adding that this uptrend has been noticed since the end of last year till the beginning of this year.
“If we want to overcome this pandemic, we must follow the health protocols,” the official advised.
A test positivity rate of over 5% is a cause for concern for any country, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
