Covid-19: Bangladesh records 17 more deaths, 9,614 fresh cases

Bangladesh recorded 17 more deaths from Covid-19 and 9,614 new cases in the 24 hours till 8am Saturday.
A 28.02% infection rate was logged during that period after 34,311 samples were tested at 857 labs across the country, according to the health directorate.
The test positivity rate on Friday was 28.49% and it was 26.37% on Thursday.
The country had reported 11,434 cases and 12 deaths in the 24 hours till 8am Friday.
The country last logged 17 deaths on October 13 last with 513 cases.
Between Friday and Saturday mornings, 482 patients also recovered and left hospitals around the nation.
The latest data took the country’s Covid death toll to 28,209, the total caseload to 1,674,230, and the total number of recoveries to 1,556,079.
The new figures also left the overall mortality rate at 1.68%, the overall recovery rate at 92.94% and the overall test positivity rate at 13.86%.
Among the 17 new deceased, 11 were men and six were women. All of them died while undergoing treatment at hospitals.
Eleven deaths were reported in Dhaka Division alone, two each in Chittagong and Khulna, and one each in Barisal and Mymensingh divisions.
Bangladesh reported the highest number of daily fatalities -- 264 -- on August 10 last year and the highest daily caseload -- 16,230 -- on July 28 last year.
Until Saturday, according to DGHS, of the total 28,209 deaths, 12,340 occurred in Dhaka Division; 5,715 in Chittagong; 2,068 in Rajshahi; 3,626 in Khulna; 953 in Barisal; 1,279 in Sylhet; 1,376 in Rangpur; and 852 in Mymensingh divisions.
Until Thursday, Bangladesh’s total tally of Omicron cases was at 64, according to GISAID, a global initiative.
December 9, 2021, was the last time when Bangladesh logged zero Covid-19 death -- nearly three weeks after recording zero deaths in a day -- as the pandemic was apparently showing signs of easing.
The country reported last year’s first zero death in a day on November 20 since the pandemic broke out in Bangladesh in March 2020.
