Covid-19: Bangladesh logs 12 more deaths, 9,500 new cases in a day
The daily positivity rate climbs to 25.11%

Bangladesh reported 12 more Covid-linked deaths with 9,500 fresh cases in 24 hours to Wednesday morning.
The positivity rate in the country further increased to 25.11% from Tuesday’s 23.98% after testing 37,573 samples, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
Bangladesh last logged 10,126 cases and 215 deaths on August 12, last year with a positivity rate of 22.46% in 24 hours.
The fresh numbers took the country’s total fatalities to 28,176 while the caseload mounted to 1,642, 294 on Wednesday.
Among the new deceased, 10 were men and two women. Eight deaths were reported in Dhaka Division while two in Chittagong and one each in Rajshahi and Sylhet divisions.
Meanwhile, the mortality rate stood at 1.72%.
The recovery rate further declined to 94.64% with the recovery of 473 more patients during the 24-hour period.
The country has 59,862 active Covid-19 cases till Wednesday, which is still lower than most of last two years.
With 12 new fatalities, the seven-day moving average of single-day deaths in Bangladesh was 9.28 on Wednesday.
The latest figures are still much lower than those reported during its peak in last year.
Between July 7 and August 12, the country constantly recorded over 200 deaths in a day, except for a few days.
The country reported the highest number of daily fatalities of 264 on August 10 last year, while the highest daily caseload was 16,230 on July 28 last year.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh’s total tally of Omicron cases reached 55 with the detection of 22 more cases till Monday, according to GISAID, a global initiative on sharing all influenza data.
Health authorities marked Dhaka as a red zone owing to its high number of cases for the last few days.
Bangladesh reported its first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a strain of coronavirus later named Sars-CoV-2, on March 8, 2020. The first death was reported 10 days later.
Amid the growing concern over the new Omicron variant of the coronavirus, the government on January 13 came out with the restrictions on movement of people and public transport vehicles.
A large number of the population has also been vaccinated with the country crossing the landmark of administering 100 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines on December 1, nearly in 10 months after kicking off a nationwide campaign.
The fast-spreading coronavirus has so far claimed over 5.5 million lives and infected over 335 million people throughout the world, according to Worldometer.
More than 271 million people have recovered from the disease, which has affected 223 countries and territories across the planet.
