Although health experts had been predicting that the Covid-19 test positivity rate would go above 5% in the coming months, the rate has already gone above 4% in the first week of January.
Bangladesh registered another 892 new Covid-19 cases in the 24 hours till Wednesday morning, amid fears of the fast-spreading Omicron variant making deeper inroads.
Earlier, the country reported 775 and 674 fresh cases on Tuesday and Monday, in that order.
With the latest cases, the country’s total Covid-19 caseload went up to 1,588,807 and the daily infection rate to 4.2%, according to the bulletin of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
The daily test positivity rate stood at 3.91% on Tuesday and 3.37% on Monday.

Altogether 3,892 people were infected with Covid in the past seven days, an increase of 63% from the previous week, said the DGHS Director (Non-communicable Disease Prevention), Professor Dr Robed Amin, at a virtual press conference.
“The number of patients has increased compared to the past week but it is not alarmingly high yet,” he said.
The number of tests also went up compared to the previous weeks. “We took around 14,000 more samples this week compared to the previous week,” he said.
He said Omicron was spreading but people could minimize the risk by following health guidelines, particularly wearing masks and washing hands, he said at the press conference.
3 more deaths
During the preceding 24-hour period, the country also reported three deaths, taking the tally to 28,090.
Another 212 people recovered from illness as well during the same time, bringing the total number of recoveries to 1,550,168.
As many as 21,302 samples were tested across the country. The latest figures put the recovery rate at 97.57% and the mortality rate at 1.77 %.
Besides, Bangladesh’s total tally of Omicron cases stood at 10 with the detection of three cases on Friday, according to GISAID, a global initiative on sharing all influenza data.
On December 9 last year, Bangladesh logged zero Covid-related deaths after nearly three weeks as the pandemic was apparently showing signs of easing.
The country reported the highest number of daily fatalities of 264 on August 10 last year, while the highest daily caseload was 16,230 on July 28 last year.
