Bangladesh logs highest Covid daily infections in 13 weeks
775 new cases, six deaths reported in a day

Bangladesh registered 775 more Covid-19 cases in the 24 hours to Tuesday morning – the highest single-day tally in 13 weeks.
It was on October 4 last when the country recorded more Covid-19 cases – 794 people testing positive for the deadly virus.
According to the latest data by the health authorities, the country’s daily coronavirus infection rate increased to 3.91% from Monday’s 3.37%.
With the latest development, the total caseload stands at 1,587,915.
Dhaka recorded the most cases among the eight divisions, logging 655 infections.
The total fatality rose to 28,087 with six more deaths reported during the 24-hour period.
Another 253 people recovered from the illness, bringing the total number of recoveries to 1,549,557.
As many as 19,838 samples were tested across the country. The latest figures put the recovery rate at 97.61% and the mortality rate at 1.77 %.
The seven-day moving average of single-day deaths in Bangladesh was 3.57 on Tuesday.
The country reported the highest number of daily fatalities of 264 on August 5 this year, while the highest daily caseload was 16,230 on July 28 this year.
Bangladesh officially began the dispensation of booster doses of a Covid-19 vaccine on a limited scale from December 28.
The country reported its first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a strain of coronavirus later named Sars-CoV-2, on March 8, 2020. The first death was reported 10 days later.
Bangladesh lifted a nationwide lockdown on August 11. However, experts have warned against complacency as many countries are seeing a surge in infections yet again.
A large number of the population has also been vaccinated with the country crossing the landmark of administering 100 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines on December 1, nearly in 10 months after kicking off a nationwide campaign.
Meanwhile, the discovery of a new variant, Omicron, has triggered a global alarm. Bangladesh reported seven Omicron cases till now.
Called B.1.1.529, Omicron is the fifth variant of concern designated by the World Health Organization (WHO).
The fast-spreading coronavirus has so far claimed over 5.4 million lives and infected over 293 million people throughout the world, according to Worldometer.
More than 255 million people have recovered from the disease, which has affected 223 countries and territories across the planet.
