Bangladesh has had the death toll from coronavirus infection cross the grim milestone of 21,000, with the country continuing to battle a deadly second wave induced by the Delta variant.
The health authorities have reported 246 new deaths in the 24 hours to 8am on Monday, taking the total toll to 21,162.
The country took only five days to add the latest 1,000 deaths to the nationwide toll. Bangladesh crossed the 20,000-mark on July 28.
Dhaka counted 76 deaths, the highest among the eight divisions, followed by Chittagong with 64 fatalities.
Khulna division reported 30 deaths while Rajshahi reported 22, Barisal 16, Rangpur and Sylhet 14 each, and Mymensingh 10.
The caseload surged to 1,280,317 after 15,989 people had tested positive for the virus until 8am Monday, according to the latest data by the Directorate General of Health Services.
Dhaka logged 7,660 cases, the highest among the divisions, followed by Chittagong with 3,315 and Khulna 1,373.
As many as 53,462 samples were tested across the country, with a positivity rate of 29.91%.
On the other hand, an additional 15,482 patients recovered from the infectious disease across the country, taking the figures for total recovery to 1,108,748.
The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.65%.
Vaccination
Till Monday, a total of 1,773 people had received the second dose of the Oxford-Astrazeneca vaccine, taking the total to 4,299.859. Meanwhile, a total of 5,820,033 people have received the first dose of the vaccine till now.
Additionally, 225,525 people received the first dose of the Sinopharm vaccine during the same period, taking the total to 2,473,631 till now, while 49,558 people received the second dose.
Meanwhile, a total of 50,235 people have received the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine. On the other hand, 786 people received a second dose of the vaccine till 8am Monday, taking the total to 2,250.
At the same time, 76,544 people received the first dose of the Moderna vaccine, taking the total number to 764,225.
The health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a strain of coronavirus named Sars-CoV-2, on March 8, 2020.
The fast spreading coronavirus has claimed more than 4.2 million lives and had infected nearly 200 million people across the world till Monday afternoon, according to Worldometer.
As many as 179.76 million people have recovered from Covid-19, which has spread to 220 countries and territories across the planet.
