Covid-19: Daily test-positivity rate drops below 3% again in Bangladesh

435 new cases and seven fatalities reported in 24 hours

The daily test-positivity rate for Covid-19 in Bangladesh has dropped below 3% again after going over the mark for a day. 

The latest figures showed an infection rate of 2.79% in the 24 hours to Friday morning, according to a Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

On Thursday, the daily infection rate was 3.18% while on Wednesday, it stood at 2.92%.

The country is seeing a trend of single-digit percentage in test positivity rate for over six weeks now after a 10.3% infection rate was reported on December 19.

The overall test positivity rate now stands at 14.43%.

Meanwhile, a total of 435 people tested positive for the infectious disease during the 24-hour time frame, taking the total number of cases in Bangladesh to 537,465.

Deaths

The overall death toll climbed to 8,182 after seven deaths were reported in 24 hours..

Earlier on January 29, the country also reported seven daily deaths from the infection.

Of the seven deceased – four men and three women – six were from Dhaka division and one from Rajshahi division. All of them died while being treated at hospitals.

So far, 6,200 men (75.78%) and 1,982 women (24.22%) have died from Covid-19 across the country. 

Since the beginning, 4,559 people have died in Dhaka division, 1,501 in Chittagong, 468 in Rajshahi, 553 in Khulna, 247 in Barisal, 307 in Sylhet, 357 in Rangpur, and 190 in Mymensingh.

The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.52%.

Recoveries

The health authorities said 507 people recovered from the disease over the preceding 24 hours.

So far, 482,424 patients – 89.76% – have made full recovery across the country.

As many as 15,566 samples, including the pending ones, were tested in the 206 authorized labs -- government and private -- across the country.

Currently, 10,347 people are in isolation and 33,587 are quarantined.

On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2.

The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December, 2019 and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.

Global situation

The fast spreading coronavirus has claimed 2,296,354 lives and infected 105,493,752 people across the world till Friday afternoon, according to Worldometer.

As many as 77,193,410 people have recovered from Covid-19 which has spread to 222 countries and territories across the planet.

The US has recorded the most cases since the start of the pandemic with 27,273,890 followed by India with 10,803,533 and Brazil with 9,397,769.

Meanwhile, as many as 466,988 people died from Covid-19 so far in the US.

Brazil has the world's second-highest Covid-19 death toll, after the US, and the third-largest outbreak, after the US and India.

Brazil reported 228,883     deaths from Covid-19 while death toll in India reached 154,862.
