The daily test positivity rate for Covid-19 has again sunk below 5% in Bangladesh in 24 hours between Monday and Tuesday.
The latest figures show an infection rate of 4.65% in the last 24 hours as of Tuesday morning, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) press release.
A total of 702 people tested positive for Covid-19 over the same period, taking the total number of cases in Bangladesh to 529,031.
The overall infection rate of the country stands at 15.18%.
The country has also registered 20 new deaths due to Covid-19 in the 24 hours, raising the total death tally to 7,942.
Of the 20 deceased – 14 men and six women – 11 were from Dhaka division; six from Chittagong; two from Rajshahi, and one was from Khulna division.
Of the victims, 18 died at different hospitals and two at home.
So far, 6,018 men (75.77%) and 1,924 women (24.23%) have died from Covid-19 across the country.
Since the beginning, 4,406 people have died in Dhaka division, 1,457 in Chittagong, 454 in Rajshahi, 544 in Khulna, 240 in Barisal, 301 in Sylhet, 354 in Rangpur, and 186 in Mymensingh.
The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.50%.
The health authorities said 682 people recovered from the disease over the preceding 24 hours.
So far, 473,855 patients – 89.57% – have made full recovery across the country.
As many as 15,097 samples, including the pending ones, were tested in the 199 authorized labs -- government and private -- across the country.
Currently, 11,072 people are in isolation and 36,701 are quarantined.
On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2.
The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December, 2019 and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.
Global situation
The fast spreading coronavirus has claimed 2,051,319 lives and infected 96,070,755 people across the world till Tuesday afternoon, according to Worldometer.
As many as 68,738,845 people have recovered from Covid-19 which has spread to 220 countries and territories across the planet.
The US has recorded the most cases since the start of the pandemic with 24,626,441 cases, followed by India with 10,582,647 and Brazil with 8,512,238.
Meanwhile, as many as 408,623 people died from Covid-19 so far in the US.
Brazil has the world's second-highest Covid-19 death toll, after the US, and the third-largest outbreak, after the US and India.
Brazil reported 210,328 deaths from Covid-19 while death toll in India reached 152,593.
