Covid-19: Bangladesh records 31 more deaths, 1,007 new cases in 24hrs

Death toll reaches 7,718

Bangladesh has registered 31 deaths from Covid-19 in the 24 hours to Thursday morning. With the latest development, the total number of deaths reached 7,718 in the country.

The country also logged a total of 519,905 coronavirus cases with 1,007 people testing positive over the same period.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) revealed the latest figures on Covid-19 in the country with a press release on Thursday.

Of the 31 deceased – 21 men and 10 women – 18 were from Dhaka division; six from Chittagong; two each from Rajshahi, Rangpur, and Mymensingh; and one from Barisal division.

Of the victims, 29 died at different hospitals and two at home.

So far, 5,867 men (76.02%) and 1,851 women (23.98%) have died from Covid-19 across the country. 

Since the beginning, 4,250 people have died in Dhaka division, 1,426 in Chittagong, 445 in Rajshahi, 538 in Khulna, 239 in Barisal, 294 in Sylhet, 350 in Rangpur, and 176 in Mymensingh.

The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.48%.

The health authorities said 966 people recovered from the disease over the preceding 24 hours.

So far, 464,446 patients – 89.33% – have made full recovery across the country.

As many as 15,381 samples, including the pending ones, were tested in the 181 authorized labs -- government and private -- across the country.

The latest figures show an infection rate of 6.55%. The overall infection rate of the country stands at 15.67%.

Currently, 11,256 people are in isolation and 38,344 are quarantined.

On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2.

The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December, 2019 and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.

Global situation

The fast spreading coronavirus has claimed 1,893,473 lives and infected 87,744,324 people across the world till Thursday afternoon, according to Worldometer.

As many as 63,212,429 people have recovered from Covid-19 which has spread to 220 countries and territories across the planet.

The US has recorded the most cases since the start of the pandemic with 21,857,616 followed by India with 10,395,938 and Brazil with 7,874,539.

Meanwhile, as many as 369,990 people died from Covid-19 so far in the US.

Brazil has the world's second-highest Covid-19 death toll, after the US, and the third-largest outbreak, after the US and India.

Brazil reported 199,043 deaths from Covid-19 while death toll in India reached 150,372.
