Covid-19: Bangladesh records 1,861 new cases, another 37 die

The country has so far confirmed over 485,000 cases and 6,967 fatalities

Bangladesh has reported 1,861 new Covid-19 cases in a daily count, taking the tally so far to 485,965.

The death toll climbed to 6,967 after 37 fatalities were registered in the 24 hours to Thursday morning, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said in a statement.

The number of recoveries outpaced active cases in the same period as another 4,486 patients recovered from Covid-19 through treatment at home and in hospital care. It brings the total recovery to 410,452.

Of the 37 deceased — 28 men and nine women — 23 were from Dhaka Division, seven from Chittagong, three from Mymensingh and two each from Rajshahi and Sylhet. 

Thirty-six of them died at different hospitals in the country while one died at home.

So far, 5,326 men (76.45%) and 1,641 women (23.55%) have died of Covid-19 across the country.

The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.43%.

The DGHS said 16,600 samples were collected from suspected Covid-19 patients in the last 24 hours.

As many as 16,265 samples, including some pending ones, were tested at the 140 authorized labs — government and private — across the country and 1,861 new patients were confirmed.

The latest figures show an infection rate of 11.44%.

To date, nearly 2.93 million tests have been conducted in the country, leading to an overall infection rate of 16.60%.

As of Thursday, a total of 410,452 patients — 84.46% of all infected — have made full recovery across the country.

On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2.

The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December last year and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.

The fast spreading coronavirus has claimed 1,578,356 lives and infected 69,369,386 people across the world till Thursday evening, according to Worldometer.

As many as 48,140,168 people have recovered from Covid-19 which has spread to 220 countries and territories across the planet.
