Covid-19: Bangladesh records highest single day infection in a week

Death toll reaches 6,140

Bangladesh has recorded the highest single day infection from Covid-19. The country reported 1,845 people testing Covid-19 positive in the 24 hours heading into Thursday morning.

With the latest development, the total number of infections reached 427,198 in the country.

The country also logged 13 deaths from Covid-19, taking the total number of deaths to 6,140 in the country.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) revealed the latest figures on Covid-19 in the country with a press release on Thursday.

Of the 13 deceased – nine men and four women – eight were from Dhaka division, two from Rangpur, and one each from Chittagong, Rajshahi, and Sylhet division.

So far, 4,728 men (77%) and 1,412 women (23%) have died from Covid-19 across the country. 

Since the beginning, 3,213 have died in Dhaka division, 1,209 in Chittagong, 375 in Rajshahi, 480 in Khulna, 205 in Barishal, 257 in Sylhet, 273 in Rangpur, and 128 in Mymensingh.

The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.44%.

The health authorities said 1,737 people recovered from the disease over the preceding 24 hours.

So far, 344,868 patients – 80.73% – have made full recovery across the country.

As many as 17,115 samples, including the pending ones, were tested in the 115 authorized labs -- government and private -- across the country.

The latest figures show an infection rate of 10.78%. The overall infection rate of the country stands at 17.08%.

Currently, 12,177 people are in isolation and 39,574 are quarantined.

On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2.

The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December last year and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.

The fast spreading coronavirus has claimed 1,291,000 lives and infected 52,521,154 people across the world till Thursday afternoon, according to Worldometer.

As many as 36,729,272 people have recovered from Covid-19 which has spread to 213 countries and territories across the planet.
