Covid-19: Bangladesh records 36 more deaths as total cases near 330,000

A total of 227,809 patients have made full recovery across the country so far

Bangladesh has registered 36 more deaths from Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, taking the number of total fatalities to 4,552.

The country also logged more than 329,000 coronavirus cases with 1,892 people testing positive over the same period. 

With this development, the number of all confirmed cases so far jumped to 329,251.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) revealed the latest figures on Covid-19 in the country with a press release on Tuesday.

Of the 36 deceased – 19 men and 17 women – 16 were from Dhaka division, eight from Khulna, six from Chittagong, two each from Rajshahi and Barisal, and one each from Sylhet and Rangpur divisions.

Among the victims, 35 died at different hospitals and one at home.

So far, 3,553 men (78.05%) and 999 women (21.95%) have died from Covid-19 across the country. 

The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.38%.

The DGHS said 15,142 samples were collected from suspected Covid-19 patients in the last 24 hours. 

As many as 14,973 samples, including the pending ones, were tested in the 94 authorized labs -- government and private -- across the country and 1,892 new patients were confirmed.

The latest figures show an infection rate of 12.64%.

To date, 1,659,697 tests have been conducted in the country, leading to an overall infection rate of 19.84% so far.

The health authorities said 3,236 people recovered from the disease over the preceding 24 hours.

So far, 227,809 patients — 69.19% of all infected — have made full recovery across the country.

On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2.

The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December last year and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.

The fast spreading coronavirus has claimed 897,289 lives and infected 27,514,164 people across the world till Tuesday afternoon, according to Worldometer.

As many as 19,608,573 people have recovered from Covid-19 which has spread to 213 countries and territories across the planet.
