Liberation War Museum trustee Tariq Ali dies of Covid-19

He is laid to eternal rest at Mirpur Martyred Intellectuals Graveyard in Dhaka

Ziauddin Tariq Ali, a social activist and Liberation War Museum trustee, has succumbed to Covid-19.

The 75-year-old breathed his last at Bangladesh Specialized Hospital in Dhaka at 11:11am on Monday, confirmed Dr Sarwar Ali, another member of the museum’s board of trustees.

Tariq Ali was admitted to the hospital about 10 days ago with Covid-19, he added.

Tariq Ali was taken to the Liberation War Museum premises in Agargaon, Dhaka, where his colleagues, fellow musicians, artists,  cultural activists, and people from all walks of life paid their respects to him.

He was laid to eternal rest at Mirpur Martyred Intellectuals Graveyard in Dhaka. 

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed deep shock and sorrow at Tariq Ali’s death in a message on Monday, reports UNB.

In her message she recalled Tariq Ali’s contributions to spreading the spirit of independence during the Liberation War in 1971.

Born in 1945, Tariq Ali was one of the members of Muktir Gan, a cultural team that worked during the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971. 

He was also chief coordinator for the new building of the Liberation War Museum.

He also served as an executive member of Chayanaut and president of Shammilito Samajik Andolan.

Tariq Ali is survived by his wife, son, and daughter.
