Covid-19: Tests and infections drop in 24hrs, deaths on the rise

Bangladesh recorded 35 new deaths and 1,950 new cases in the last 24 hours

Even though the number of tests and confirmed new patients saw a decline compared to the previous day, the daily death toll from Covid-19 has increased. 

Bangladesh recorded 35 more deaths from Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, taking the number of total fatalities to 4,316.

The country also logged more than 314,000 coronavirus cases with 1,950 people testing positive over the same period. With this development, the number of all confirmed cases now stands at 314,946.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) revealed the latest figures on Covid-19 in the country with a press release on Tuesday.  

Of the 35 deceased, 21 were men, while 14 were women. So far, 3,385 men (78.43%) and 931 women (21.57%) have died of Covid-19 across the country.

Among the people who died in the last 24 hours, 14 were from Dhaka division, seven from Chittagong division, four from Rangpur division, three each from Rajshahi and Khulna divisions, 2 from Barisal division, and one each from Sylhet and Mymensingh divisions.

Of the total 4,316 deaths, 2,083 deaths occurred in Dhaka division, 939 in Chittagong division, 290 in Rajshahi division, 359 in Khulna division, 168 in Barisal division, 192 in Sylhet division, 194 in Rangpur division, and 91 in Mymensingh division, according to the press release.

The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.37%.

The DGHS said 11,981 samples were collected from suspected Covid-19 patients in the last 24 hours. 

As many as 12,209 samples, including the pending ones, were tested in the 92 authorized labs — government and private — across the country, and 1,950 new patients were confirmed.

The latest figures show an infection rate of 15.97%.

To date, 1,562,412 tests have been conducted in the country, leading to an overall infection rate of 20.16% so far.

The health authorities said 3,290 people recovered from the disease over the preceding 24 hours.

So far, 208,177 patients — 66.10% of all infected — have made full recovery across the country.

The DGHS said to make treatment facilities easily available for the Covid-19 patients, the government has introduced telemedicine services, comprising 70 physicians and 20 health workers, for round the clock service in the country.

A total of 278,689 people have so far received healthcare services from telemedicine.

The DGHS said 19,790,305 people received healthcare services from hotline mobile numbers and health web portals as the government formed a group of medical professionals to provide emergency healthcare services.

On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2.

The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December last year and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.

The fast-spreading coronavirus has claimed 855,352 lives and infected 25,662,163 people across the world till Tuesday afternoon, according to Worldometer.

As many as 17,962,540 people have recovered from Covid-19 which has spread to 213 countries and territories across the planet.
