Update : 14 Aug 2020, 03:29 PM

Bangladesh continues to record more than 2,500 Covid-19 fresh cases yet after cancelling virtual health bulletin, saying that the coronavirus situation in the country has improved and authorities find the briefing “unnecessary” considering the current situation.

According to the press release, issued by Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Friday afternoon, 2,766 people have tested positive in the last 24 hours, reaching a total of 271,881 infected.

At the same time, 34 people died in the last 24 hours, taking the death toll to 3,591.

Interestingly, the positive percentage rate is 21.54%, suggesting that the idea of introducing fees for the Covid 19 tests in the country could not be that much fruitful.

The DGHS had said that they were introducing the fees so that those who don’t need to undergo tests could refrain from conducting tests and only the symptomatic patients would conduct tests on time. They also said that they are looking forward to increasing the positivity rate significantly.

But when the fees were introduced the positivity rate was 21.26% on July 3, and it has increased barely, reaching 21.54% right now.

In the meantime, some 1,752 patients recovered, taking the total recovered to 156,623, at a recovery rate of 57.60%.

The DGHS press release mentioned that of the deceased, 28 were men and six women.

Moreover, 18 of them were from Dhaka, two from Chittagong, two from Rangpur, one each from Khulna and Barisal, and four each from Rajshahi and Sylhet divisions.

Thirty-three of the deceased died in different hospitals and one at home.

Of the deceased, two were aged between 31 and 40, four were in the 41-50 years range, six in 51-60 years and 22 were above 60.

Bangladesh confirmed the first Covid-19 case on March 8, and the first death from the coronavirus on March 18.

The gender-wise analysis of the victims disclosed that 2,841 (79.11%) people who have died from Covid-19 were male and 750 (20.89%) were females respectively.

Besides, the age-wise analysis of the deceased revealed that 47.70% patients who died were aged above 60 while the second largest portion were from the 51 to 60 age group (28.24%) followed by the 41-50 age group (13.67%).

More than two-third of Covid-19 hospital beds unoccupied

The general bed set for providing treatment to the Covid 19 patients in the country are mostly in Dhaka city, and more than two-third of the beds remain unoccupied.

According to the press release, of the 7,062 general beds at government and private Covid-19 dedicated hospitals, some 2,168 beds remain occupied, meaning only 30.69% beds are in use.

In the last 24 hours, 731 patients got released while 492 got new admission throughout the country.

Besides, more than one third of the ICUs remain unoccupied till Friday.

According to the DGHS press release, of the 543 ICUs throughout the country, some 314 ICUs are occupied, meaning 42.17% of the ICUs remain unoccupied.

The fast spreading coronavirus has claimed 757,779 lives and infected 21,095,532 people across the world till Friday afternoon, according to Worldometer.
