Health authorities recorded 37 new Covid-19 deaths and 3,240 fresh cases across Bangladesh in the 24 hours till yesterday morning.
With the latest figures, the number of total confirmed cases climbed to 108,775 and the death toll rose to 1,425.
Prof Nasima Sultana, additional director general (Administration) at the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), revealed the latest data in the daily online bulletin from Dhaka on yesterday afternoon.
In the last 24-hour span, 1,048 Covid-19 patients recovered, taking the number of total recoveries since March when the pandemic entered the country, to 43,993.
In the same 24 hours, she said 13,779 samples from suspected patients were collected and a total of 14,031 were tested in 61 labs, including 31 in Dhaka alone.
With 3,240 of the tests coming back positive, the detection rate of new patients on Saturday stood at 23.09%.
Against the total number of detected cases, the recovery rate is 40.44% and the mortality rate is 1.31% in the country, Prof Nasima said.
Across the country, 628 more people were sent into isolation in the last 24 hours, while 187 were released.
During the same period, another 1,538 people were in home or institutional quarantine, while 2,074 were released, added the DGHS official.
Chittagong sees most deaths
Unlike other days, the body count in Chittagong division surpassed that recorded in Dhaka division. 13 people died of Covid-19 in Chittagong division, followed by 10 in Dhaka division.
Rajshahi and Mymensingh divisions came third and fourth, respectively, with five and four deaths. Khulna and Barisal divisions registered just two deaths each and only one fatality was reported in Rangpur division.
The deceased include 29 male patients. Of the 37 new victims, 10 died at home, said the DGHS official.
Most deceased from 50 plus age group
A significant number of fresh casualties (31) were above 50 years in age, with 13 of them being nonagenarians. The 61-70 and 71-80 age groups saw seven and six deaths, respectively.
Shockingly, five of the dead were in their 40s, and two each were in the 21-30 and 31-40 age groups. The youngest of the new deceased was aged 11 -20 and the oldest was over 100.
