A former leader of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) allegedly died after falling from the rooftop of a five-storey building while fleeing during a police raid in Savar, on the outskirts of Dhaka, early Friday.
The deceased was identified as Monowarul Hossain Bokshi, 29, a former vice-president of Savar Thana JCD and son of Jafar, a security guard at the Bangladesh Public Administration Training Centre (BPATC).
The incident occurred around 12:00am at the BPATC Staff Quarters in Savar.
According to police, Shahariar Kabir Soumi had fled from Pirganj in Rangpur with a young woman following a romantic relationship. The woman's family later filed a missing diary with Pirganj Police Station. Acting on the complaint, a team from Pirganj Police arrived at Savar Model Police Station around 11:00pm on Thursday before conducting a joint raid with Savar police at the residence of Monowarul, the suspect's maternal uncle.
Police said Soumi and the woman had already left the house before officers arrived. Sensing the police presence, Monowarul allegedly ran to the rooftop in an attempt to flee. Police followed him to the roof, where he suddenly fell from the five-storey building.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Saiful Alam of Savar Model Police Station said the Pirganj police had come to Savar to arrest the suspect and informed the local police, who then joined the operation.
"While the Pirganj police entered the building to apprehend the suspect, a young man fell from the rooftop and died. Members of Savar Model Police Station were stationed outside the building," the OC said.
Police have formed a five-member investigation committee to probe the incident.
