A Gazipur City Corporation accounts officer died after falling from the eighth floor of his apartment at Rangs Garden Palace on Siddheswari Road in Dhaka's Ramna area early Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Nazrul Islam, 55, who had an arrest warrant issued against him in a CR (complaint) case pending before a Gazipur court.
The incident took place at around 12:30am at the apartment building located at 63/B Siddheswari Road.
Confirming the incident, Ramna Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Uzzal said police had gone to the flat to execute the arrest warrant.
"Upon sensing the presence of police, Nazrul may have attempted to flee through the back door and taken shelter on the balcony ledge, or tried to move to a neighbouring flat. He apparently lost his footing during the attempt and fell from the building, sustaining critical injuries," the SI said.
He said Nazrul was rescued and taken to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) at around 2:45am, where the on-duty physician declared him dead.
The body has been sent to the DMCH morgue for an autopsy.
Police said the exact circumstances surrounding the incident will be determined following further investigation.
