Confirmed coronavirus infection cases have crossed the 11,000 mark in Bangladesh as the country recorded the highest single-day cases with 790 more people testing positive in the last 24 hours.
With the latest figure, the number of total confirmed cases jumped to 11,719.
The country also witnessed deaths of three more people from Covid-19 over the same period, taking the number of fatalities to 186 in the country.
Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) Additional Director General (administration) Prof Nasima Sultana revealed the latest figures at the daily online bulletin on Covid-19 from Dhaka on Wednesday afternoon.
Two of the deceased were over 60 years while one was aged between 41 and 50.
Among the deceased, two were males and one was female. Two of them were from Dhaka and one was from outside Dhaka division.
She said as many as 6,771 samples were collected in the past 24 hours and of those 6,241 samples were tested, taking the total number of tests conducted in the country to 99,646.
In the briefing, Nasima also revealed that no new patients recovered from the infection in the past 24 hours.
As per the revised guidelines provided by the newly formed Clinical Management Committee of the health authorities, so far 1,403 people have won the fight against coronavirus.
In the last 24 hours, a total of 184 people were placed in isolation while 84 were released.
Meanwhile, 3,889 people were quarantined and 3,872 were released in the last 24-hour.
In the last 24 hours, 81,630 personal protective equipment (PPE) were collected and 40,922 PPEs had been distributed while a total of 4,21,480 PPEs remained in stock, she said.
In the last 24-hours, 58,885 calls were received at the health hotline numbers.
She said the health authority is increasing the number of sample collection booths with the help of Brac.
“Brac has set up four booths at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, three in Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, and one in Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Memorial KPJ Specialized Hospital,” she said.
Oval group has set up booths in Narayanganj and Dhaka’s Titumir College, she added.
She said when it comes to collecting samples from a suspected patient’s home, the health authority would prioritize senior citizens, special-need children and people who are too sick to leave home.
She said IEDCR will also keep on collecting and testing samples.
On March 8, the health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first case of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new strain of coronavirus, Sars-CoV-2.
Till now, the fast spreading coronavirus has claimed more than 258,500 lives and infected more than 3,741,270 people across the world, according to worldometer.
As many as 1,247,377 people have recovered from Covid-19, a disease caused by a new strain of coronavirus, which has spread to 212 countries and territories across the planet.
