Sub-Inspector Nazir Uddin is the fourth policeman in Bangladesh to have died of the deadly viral disease
Another policeman has died of the Covid-19 infection, raising the death toll of Bangladeshi policemen due to the pandemic to 4.
Nazir Uddin, 55, who was a sub-inspector of the Special Branch of police, passed away on Friday morning, at the Central Police Hospital in Rajarbagh, Dhaka.
Dr Hasan Ul Haider, deputy inspector general (DIG) of police and director of the hospital, confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.
He said Nazir had been undergoing treatment at the ICU on April 26, after getting admitted with Covid-19 infection.
“He breathed his last at around 7:45am today [Friday],” he added.
According to the Police Headquarters, Nazir Uddin tested positive for Covid-19, a severely acute respiratory illness caused by SARS-CoV-2, on April 25, and was admitted to the Central Police Hospital.
So far, 677 members of Bangladesh Police have been diagnosed with Covid-19, according to sources at the Police Headquarters.
Nazir is from Kazitola village under Bhangura upazila in Pabna.
His first namaz-e-janaja was held in Rajarbagh later on Friday morning, and his body was sent to his village home for burial under the management of police.
Nazir is the fourth member of Bangladesh Police who has died of the deadly viral infection.
Earlier, Assistant Sub-Inspector Abdul Khalek of the Police Order Management (POM), Constable Ashek Mahmud of the Dhaka North Traffic Division, and Constable Mohammad Jasim Uddin of Wari Division died in Dhaka.
Of the 677 policemen who tested Covid-19 positive, 328 are from Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), sources at the Police Headquarters said. Of them, 68 new cases were detected in the last 24 hours.
Sources further said 55 policemen have recovered from Covid-19 so far, while 1,225 policemen are currently in institutional quarantine, and 174 in isolation.
