Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina urged Australia to continue to apply pressure on Myanmar to resolve the Rohingya crisis during a meeting in Sydney on Friday with the Australian foreign minister, Julie Bishop.
PM Hasina is on a three-day visit to Australia which will conclude today with a visit to Sydney University and a meeting with her counterpart, Malcolm Turnbull.
Foreign Secretary Md Shahidul Haque is also among the Bangladesh delegation and he briefed reporters after Friday’s meeting at the InterContinental Hotel in the harbour city.
“Julie Bishop highly appreciated Bangladesh and the prime minister for hosting 1.1 million Rohingyas,” Shahidul said.
“She said Australia was supportive of a solution to the Rohingya crisis and asked what would be needed to achieve that. She also highly praised the prime minister for her leadership role over women’s empowerment.”
According to Shahidul, PM Hasina told Bishop that alongside providing essential help to the Rohingya refugees, Australia would have to continue to pressure on Myanmar from different angles.
According to the PM’s press secretary, Ihsanul Karim, Hasina said Bangladesh signed an agreement with Myanmar in addition to exchange of official visits between the two countries.
“Myanmar does not deny it but they are yet to take action to implement the agreement,” Hasina said.
