Awami League candidate Khan Ahmed Shuvo has won the Tangail 7 by-polls, according to results announced by Returning Officer Shahedunnabi Chowdury.
Shuvo bagged 100,459 votes while his closest rival Jatiya Party's Zahirul Haque Zahir received 16,773 votes, he said.
Bangladesh Workers Party's Golam Nawzab Chowdhury on the other hand bagged 1,045 votes, while Bangladesh Congress Party's Rupa Roy Chowdhury got 438 votes. Independent candidate Nurul Islam Nuru has received 2,436 votes.
The voting conducted from 8am to 4pmusing Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) ended in a peaceful manner under tight security. No violence or untoward incidents have been reported so far.
A large number of law enforcers including a judicial magistrate, eight executive Magistrates, four platoons of BGB, 810 police personnel and 10 RAB mobile teams and about 1,850 Ansar members were deployed to ensure a fair and peaceful election, said District Election Officer AHM Kamrul Hasan.
The parliamentary seat fell vacant after the death of local lawmaker Ekabbar Hossain on November 16, 2021.
There are 340,379 voters in the constituency, including 169,878 females, and five transgender voters. Voters of all ages were seen standing in long lines to vote for the candidate of their choice despite the cold weather.
A total of 121 polling centres were open for voting. Of them, 57 were marked risky by the authorities at the District Election Office.
However, each centre has a team of 17-18 police officers and Ansar members to ensure a peaceful election, said Kamrul Hasan.
Superintendent of Police Mohammad Kaiser said about 680 police officers had been assigned to watch over the election. Among them, 50 are Armed Police Battalion (APBn) members, 16 mobile police units, five Striking Forces and eight Detective Branch (DB) teams in charge.
