85% of Kuet students leave halls over security concerns

  • The VC’s residence has been locked for three days
  • Administrative activities remain suspended
Update : 24 Feb 2025, 01:40 PM

Around 85% of students at Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (Kuet) have left their dormitories due to growing security concerns on campus, while the remaining 15% stay in fear and uncertainty.

Meanwhile, the vice chancellor’s (VC) residence has been locked for three days, and administrative activities remain suspended.

The research rooms of faculty members involved in academic work were reopened on the evening of February 23 after being locked for a period.

According to students, no visible steps have been taken by the administration to address security concerns following the violent incidents of February 18. As a result, many have left campus for safer locations.

Students have boycotted the VC and are demanding his removal, along with immediate action against those involved in the attacks.

They also seek the appointment of a new VC to restore security and resume academic activities.

In a letter to the chief advisor on February 23, students reiterated their grievances: "On February 18, Kuet students organized a peaceful procession opposing the distribution of Chhatra Dal forms on campus, in line with the decision of the 93rd emergency syndicate meeting, which had banned student politics. During the procession, Kuet Chhatra Dal activists confronted and threatened students, leading to tensions. Subsequently, they, along with local BNP leaders and activists, launched a violent attack. More than 150 Kuet students were injured, and the university administration failed to ensure security during the four-hour-long assault."

Students have put forward six demands, including the VC’s resignation. Their reasons for demanding his removal include:

  • Alleged attempts to introduce student politics despite the campus ban
  • Failure to prevent the February 18 attack
  • Lack of accountability despite nearly 150 students being injured
  • Refusal to acknowledge the assault by Kuet Chhatra Dal and local BNP activists, despite ample evidence
  • Failure to fully address students’ six-point demands within the given timeframe

On February 18, clashes broke out between students over the ban on student politics, leading to chases and counter-chases.

At least 50 students were injured, many with sharp weapon wounds.

Authorities arrested five individuals in connection with the incident.

Later that night, students held a press conference, announcing a five-point demand, including the VC’s resignation.
