Students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) have decided to boycott classes and exams protesting the rehabilitation of individuals involved in politics related to the student organization, Chhatra League, on campus.
The students have initiated this boycott from Tuesday.
The decision came after two accused students moved into the dormitory on Monday night, which sparked outrage among the general student body. In response to this anger, the students announced the boycott late at night.
They have decided not to return to classes until the investigation report regarding the accused is submitted.
The students have alleged that the accused had taken a stand against the general students in order to facilitate the rehabilitation of Chhatra League at Buet.
They also accused the individuals of undermining the educational lives of other students by labeling them with various tags.
The students further noted that in March, they had boycotted classes and exams due to the late-night intrusion of Chhatra League President Saddam Hossain into the campus. This incident led to a state of stalemate for nearly a month and a half.
The current boycott is in protest against the rehabilitation of individuals involved in violence and the creation of unrest on campus, demanding punishment for those responsible instead.
Speaking on the condition of anonymity, one general student mentioned that there is a draft in accordance with Article 5 of the University’s Ordinance where it has been said that no activities associated with student politics can be carried out without the permission of the university’s Directorate of Students’ Welfare (DSW).
“Yet, no action has been taken against those who were involved.”
“Our demand is for visible action to be taken by the inquiry committee in a short time. They take action against the accused students,” the student added.
Buet’s 19th batch students decided to boycott classes on behalf of all general students.
On Tuesday afternoon, they met with the vice-chancellor and presented their demands.
Contacted, Buet’s DSW Director Mohammad Al Amin Siddique said: “The work of our inquiry committee is ongoing.”
