Protest rally held at Barisal University demanding withdrawal of PM’s remarks

Students warn that if their demands are not met, they would be forced to go on more strict agitation

Students of Barisal University on Monday staged a protest march demanding reform and abolition of quota in government jobs and withdrawal of prime minister's speech.

A protest rally was held under the banner of general students in front of the administrative building at 3:30pm on Monday . 

Later, the protesting students held a protest march on Barisal-Kuakata highway adjoining to the university. 

The students demanded merit-based recruitment by reforming discriminatory quotas in all jobs.

They also said that if their demands are not met, they will be forced to go on more strict agitation.

They also demanded the withdrawal of the remark given by the prime minister on Sunday.

The students protested in the residential halls of Barisal University on early Monday, claiming that the agitators demanding reform of the quota system in government jobs were insulted.

At about 12am on Monday night, the protest procession first came out from the two residential halls of the university students. Then protesting students took out a procession from the front of Sher-E-Bangla Hall of the university and moved on the entire campus area.

They were seen protesting for a while in front of the vice-chancellor's building.

Later, the students took out a procession on the Barisal-Kuakata highway and held a rally on the ground floor of the university to press home their demands.

These agitation programs lasted for more than an hour.

Earlier, a protest cultural evening was organized in front of the university administration building on Sunday evening to night.

There students performed patriotic protest songs and recitations.

After 8pm a torchlight procession took off from the university campus.

The procession after moving on the Barisal-Kuakata highway, ended at the university campus.

Student sources said same program would also be performed on Monday night.
