Chhatra League forces Rangpur Medical College to revise MBBS results

Update : 10 May 2017, 09:15 PM
Bangladesh Chhatra League activists have forced the Rangpur Medical College (RMC) authorities to revise the MBBS final examination results after 58 students, including the student front's RMC unit president and general secretary, failed to clear the tests. RMC Vice Principal Prof Dr Nur Nabi Laisu, however, told the Dhaka Tribune that discrepancies between names and roll numbers of some candidates prompted the college to suspend the results. Results of this year's MBBS exam was published on Tuesday. Among 212 candidates, 58 students, including Chhatra League's RMC unit President Masud Parvez and General Secretary Gourandra Chandra Saha, failed in the exam. Chhatra League leaders insisted that they had indeed passed but were shown to have failed in the exam, forcing them to start a sit-in protest demanding revision of the results. Several teachers, who declined to be identified, berated suspension of results. Activists of the ruling Awami League student front postponed their demonstration until Thursday. “They (Chhatra League leaders) demand they be given pass marks although they won't study a bit and perform poorly in exams. What sort of caprice is this!” one of the teachers said. “This is setting a bad example,” another teacher said. “The students should shun the attitude that they do not need to study if they are members of the ruling party student front.” Several teachers, seeking anonymity, said many student leaders are given some leeway in oral tests but it is impossible to give pass marks if they perform badly in written exams. Bangladesh Medical Association's Vice President and Rangpur Awami League leader Dr Delwar Hossain said he had spoken with the demonstrators. “It is true that names and roll numbers of several examinees did not match. I told them that they can retake the tests after six months,” he told the Dhaka Tribune. “I have also advised them to study hard.”
