The teachers of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (Ruet) went on an indefinite strike from Sunday demanding punishment for the students who confined them for around 24 hours.
Ruet Teacher’s Association President Nirendranath Mustafi declared the indefinite strike after holding an emergency meeting with its leaders on Sunday afternoon.
“The decision was taken as some students have misbehaved with us. They have also tried to assault us,” he said, adding: "Teachers will boycott classes and exams from Monday until actions are taken against the unruly students."
The Ruet authorities cancelled the 33-credit system in the face of vehement protests by students who feared that they could not be able to move up to their next sessions in the system.
As per the grading system introduced during the 2013-14 academic year, a student must achieve at least 33 credits out of 40 to pass their session. Students will be given the credits based on their performances in examinations and lab tests, which vary from one department to another.
If they fail to meet the requirements, they will not be allowed to move up to the next session and have to retake the whole year.
The students had long been protesting the 33-credit system by boycotting their classes and examinations.
Laying siege to the VC’s office, students of the 2013-14 session on August 11, 2015 had staged a demonstration on the campus that led the authorities to suspend all academic activities for a certain period.
On January 28 this year, the agitated students kept 15 teachers, including the VC, confined inside an academic building for nearly 24 hours to press home their demands.
