Rajshahi University of Engineering & Technology (Ruet) has taken disciplinary action against 48 students, including expelling four students.

The decision was made during a meeting of the university’s Student Discipline Committee on Wednesday, as said in a press release issued by Ruet's Public Relations Office.

The meeting was presided over by Ruet Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr SM Abdur Razzaque.

The university authorities decided to take disciplinary measures against the accused students after charges of attacking protesters during the July uprising and engaging in academic misconduct were proven.

Among those expelled are leaders and activists of the banned organization, Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), including the president and general secretary of Ruet's BCL unit.

According to the press release, the students expelled for life are Fahmid Latif Lion, president of Ruet's banned BCL unit and a student of the Civil Engineering Department (2014-15 session), Soumik Saha, general secretary of the banned BCL unit and a student of the Computer Science and Engineering Department (2016-17 session), Shashwata Saha Sagar, a student of the Mechanical Engineering Department (2019-20 session), and Mrinmoy Kanti Biswas, a student of the Civil Engineering Department (2019-20 session).

Additionally, allegations against Ruet officials have also been proven.

The accused officials are Naeem Rahman Nibir, assistant engineer of Ruet’s Engineering Division, Md Mahidul Islam, the data processor of the Physics Department, and AKM Anwarul Islam, sub-assistant programmer of the Education Division.

Ruet authorities have recommended that the relevant university forums take the necessary legal actions against these officials.

Regarding the matter, the Director of Ruet’s Student Welfare Office and Member Secretary of the Student Discipline Committee, Professor Dr Md Rabiul Islam Sarkar, said that after receiving complaints from students, the Ruet administration formed an investigation committee.

The investigation found that the accused students had violated the disciplinary ordinances of the university. As a result, four students were expelled for life, while two others were expelled for four semesters (two academic years).

He further mentioned that, in addition to this, 42 students have been permanently expelled from residential halls based on the report received following the August 19 operation last year.
