The Bangladesh Army, in a special operation in the capital’s Mohammadpur area, arrested five individuals, including Shawon, 23, the prime fugitive and main accused in a high-profile murder case.
A large cache of weapons, narcotics and explosives was also recovered during the raid.
An official of the 46 Independent Infantry Brigade confirmed the matter on Thursday.
He said the special operation was conducted until 2am on Wednesday night in the Sonamia Tek and Chand Udyan areas of Mohammadpur. Based on confidential intelligence, the Army learned that Shawon, who had been on the run for a long time, was hiding in the area.
Shawon is accused of brutally hacking a man to death in broad daylight last year.
Acting on the information, an operational team from the Bosila Army Camp swiftly launched the raid and arrested Shawon. Four of his associates were also detained during the same operation.
The arrested individuals were identified as Anwar, 25, Shakil, 23, Shubho, 20, and Belal, 36.
During the operation, the Army recovered eight petrol bombs, five rounds of shotgun ammunition, one Chinese knife, eight samurai swords, five machetes, one ramda, 61 yaba tablets, 35 grams of yaba powder, 475 grams of cannabis, 60 packets of cannabis, four mobile phones, 58 foreign coins and a digital weighing scale used for measuring drugs.
The Army official added that Shawon had been identified through CCTV footage analysis following the daylight murder incident last year. Several previous operations had failed as he managed to evade arrest.
However, through a precise and well-planned operation, the Army was finally able to apprehend him along with weapons and narcotics.
