More than 20,000 cleaning workers are currently engaged in removing sacrificial animal waste from the streets of Dhaka, with both city corporations pledging to deliver a clean city to residents within 12 hours.
The Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has deployed over 10,000 cleaning staff, supported by 207 dump trucks, 200 mini trucks, and various cleaning tools. DSCC has set a target of removing approximately 30,000 metric tons of waste within 12 hours.
As part of preparations, DSCC has distributed 140,000 biodegradable bags, 40 tons of bleaching powder, and 222 gallons of disinfectant across its 75 wards.
DSCC Administrator Shahjahan Mia said: “We’ve requested residents to perform sacrifices and dispose of waste only in designated areas. Please do not litter indiscriminately.”
He also added that all DSCC personnel had their Eid leave cancelled to ensure uninterrupted operations. A control room has been set up at the Nagar Bhaban (City Hall) for emergency coordination regarding Eid prayers, cattle markets, and waste removal.
Adviser to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, said: “Cleaning up sacrificial waste in this city is a major challenge. If not removed in time, it causes a foul smell and potential spread of germs and diseases.”
Expressing optimism, he said, “DSCC is expected to remove all waste within 12 hours, and city dwellers' Eid celebrations won’t be disrupted by the waste this year.”
To manage the cleanup operation, an emergency operations center has been set up at DSCC for round-the-clock monitoring.
Meanwhile, the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has taken similar initiatives. According to its Public Relations Department, DNCC has mobilized 224 dump trucks, 381 pickup vans, and 24 payloaders for Eid waste management.
For this year’s Eid, DNCC has distributed 1.25 million polythene bags, 2,500 sacks of bleaching powder, and 4,000 cans of disinfectant.
Additionally, at the Aminbazar landfill, a dedicated platform has been prepared exclusively for dumping sacrificial animal waste. To ensure environmentally friendly waste management, two trenches have been dug at the site.
DNCC Administrator Mohammad Azaz said: “All preparations are complete to swiftly remove sacrificial waste. We aim to clear all of it within the day to keep the city clean and livable.” DNCC is preparing to remove approximately 20,000 tons of waste this Eid.
