Heavy rain began in the capital on Wednesday afternoon, returned around midnight, and continued into Thursday morning, leaving city dwellers struggling under overcast skies and gloomy conditions.
Around 9am on Thursday, rainfall returned to different parts of the capital, causing suffering for office-goers and students headed to school and college.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has forecast that the rain may continue intermittently throughout the day in various areas.
Meanwhile, like the past two days, there are fears of road closures in the Kakrail and Shahbagh areas of the capital due to various protests. As a result, traffic congestion may start before noon in the surrounding areas.
On Wednesday, BNP activists blocked roads in the Kakrail and Matsya Bhaban areas by staging a sit-in before the residence of the chief adviser, Jamuna, demanding that BNP leader Ishraque Hossain be sworn in as mayor. They are still holding their position there.
On the other hand, at around 11am on Thursday, the student wing of the BNP, Chhatra Dal, plans to occupy roads in front of Shahbagh and InterContinental Dhaka to demand justice for the murder of Shahriar Alam Shammo, a student of Dhaka University and a leader of the organization fatally stabbed earlier this month near Suhrawardy Udyan.
These events are expected to create traffic congestion in those areas and may affect nearby areas as well.
With rain on one side and blocked roads due to protests on the other, residents of the capital are likely to face severe hardship again, according to general public opinion.
The met office reports that an extension of a low-pressure area stretches from West Bengal across the southwestern part of Bangladesh to the northern Bay of Bengal.
In the 24-hour forecast from 9am on Thursday, it is said that many areas in Rangpur and Mymensingh divisions, some parts of Dhaka and Sylhet divisions, and one or two places in Rajshahi, Khulna, Barisal, and Chittagong divisions may experience temporary gusty winds with lightning and light to moderate rain or thundershowers.
Additionally, some places in Rangpur, Mymensingh, and Sylhet divisions may experience moderately heavy to heavy rainfall.
