Workers in Ashulia's industrial area continued their strike on Thursday, demanding a revision of the government's announced 9% annual salary increment.
As the unrest persisted, six factories were shut down, and six others declared general holidays.
Superintendent of Police for Ashulia Industrial Zone-1 Mohammad Mominul Islam Bhuiyan confirmed the developments.
The workers claim that rising inflation has made it difficult to sustain their livelihoods on the current wages.
Their demands include a 15% annual salary increment, monthly payment of accrued leave compensation, and setting the minimum wage at Tk25,000.
To prevent any untoward incidents, law enforcement has created a strict security perimeter around the industrial zone.
Armoured vehicles and water cannons have been deployed as precautionary measures.
Industrial police said that workers in at least 25 factories joined the strike after reporting to work on Thursday morning. After staying at their workplaces for 1-2 hours, they walked out.
As a result, the authorities declared holidays at three factories belonging to New Age, Bando Design, Medlar Apparels, and Sharmin Group.
Meanwhile, six additional factories, including several under the NASA Group, were shut down due to the ongoing unrest.
The situation remains tense as workers continue to press for their demands.
