The Rajdhani Unnayan Kartipakkha (Rajuk) will hand over a list of 42 dangerous buildings to the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) within the next week so that measures can be taken to demolish the risky structures, DSCC Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh has said.
The list also includes 197 structures which will be renovated.
“We will soon take action to demolish these 42 buildings, whether they are public or private,” the mayor told reporters after the third meeting of the Dhaka South City Corporation Disaster Management Committee at Nagar Bhaban yesterday afternoon.
He added that the committee would hold weekly meetings from now on, and that the committee would be called again in 90 days.
"We want to form volunteer teams with at least 200 members in each ward. These teams should be ready immediately after any disaster. These teams will have students participating in the scouts of educational institutions, BNCC, Red Crescent members and security guards of markets. The age limit will be from 16 years to 30 years, but the age limit will be extended for security guards,” Taposh said.
The voluntary teams will be formed in every ward by May 30, according to the mayor.
“In the initial phase, we will organize regional training and exercises with volunteers every three months, and thereafter every month. Necessary funds will be allocated in the budget of Dhaka South City Corporation from the next budget for organizing training and exercises of volunteers," he said.
He further said an emergency response centre is set to be launched in the DSCC area in June.
DSCC Executive Officer Mizanur Rahman moderated the meeting. Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) President Barrister Samir Sattar, DSCC Disaster Management Committee member and Ward no 6 Councilor Md Sirajul Islam Bhatti, Director of Fire Service and Civil Defense Lt Colonel Md Rezaul Karim, and many others were in attendance.
