Jatiya Party (JaPa) senior MP Mujibul Haque Chunnu on Tuesday defended Nasir U Mahmood, the main accused in the attempted rape case filed by actress Pori Moni.
During a general discussion on the proposed budget for the 2021-22 fiscal year in parliament, Chunnu claimed that Nasir is “a good man” and that the media was targeting him.
The JaPa MP’s microphone was switched off before he could continue, as his allotted time had expired.
Nasir, who is in the real estate business, is a presidium member of Jatiya Party.
The allegations against Nasir
During a media call on Sunday, Pori Moni alleged that Nasir assaulted her at the Dhaka Boat Club in Uttara. Nasir is the entertainment and cultural affairs secretary of the club.
“Nasir U Mahmood, former president of Uttara Club Limited and a businessman named Omi wanted to rape and murder me," the actress told reporters at her residence late on Sunday.
Pori Moni claimed she, along with Omi and a make-up artist named Jimmy went to the club on June 8, when she was introduced to some of Omi’s acquaintances, who were drinking.

"I met Nasir U Mahmud there," she said.
Nasir and the people with him offered her a drink, but she declined, saying that she was feeling unwell.
They tried to force her to drink, she alleged.
One of them forced the neck of a bottle into her mouth and started touching her inappropriately, claimed the actress before adding when she resisted, they beat her up as well.
"They assaulted me and tried to kill me. Omi was also involved in the whole setup," said the actress.
Pori Moni claimed she was able to get out of the club some two and half hours later and went straight to the Banani police station, but the officials there did not lodge her complaint.
On Monday, Pori Moni filed a case over the incident with Savar police station. Nasir and five others were named as accused in the case.
Later in the day, Nasir and four others were arrested from a house in the Uttara Residential Area.
The other arrestees include businessman Omi, who has been named in the case by the actress, and three women, according to police.
