The students and teachers of the Faculty of Pharmacy at Dhaka University have started making hand sanitizer due to market shortages in the wake of coronavirus fears.
They, led by Dr Md Abdul Muhit of Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacology department, have made around 200 bottles of sanitizer in the last two days till Friday at the Biotechnology Research Centre of the university.
Initially, the sanitizer bottles will be distributed among students, teachers, and staff of the Pharmacy faculty.
Dr Abdul Muhit told journalists: “We have prepared the sanitizer at our own cost. We will talk to the Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Akhtaruzzaman about providing us funds. If he cooperates with us we can take the initiative to another dimension.”
Talking to journalists, DU VC Prof Dr M Akhtaruzzaman appreciated their initiative and said he would provide all necessary support, whatever they need.
Rumors about shutdown of Buet, DMC
Rumors spread among students on Saturday, regarding shutting down of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) and Dhaka Medical College (DMC)
Most students remained absent from classes while a few were seen on campus.
Some students of Buet told reporters that they were not aware of the decision of the authorities. But some students claimed that the authorities have shut down classes.
Likewise, students of Dhaka Medical College started leaving their respective dormitories fearing the coronavirus outbreak. They also claimed the authorities issued orders closing down academic activities.
Mizanur Rahman, director of Directorate of Students' Welfare (DSW) of Buet confirmed that the university is open and no decision to shut down has been taken.
Dr Khan Abul Kalam Azad, principal of Dhaka Medical College said: “No decision has been taken regarding suspending academic activities. If government directives come in this regard, we will go with it.”
