Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) chief Monirul Islam said investigation will clarify if Buet student Abrar Fahad’s murder was pre-planned.
He made the statements at a press briefing held at the DMP media centre in Dhaka on Monday.
He said: "Based on the confessional statements, we understand that Abrar was beaten to death on suspicions of being a Chhatra Shibir member.
“After the full investigation, we will be able to confirm whether he was beaten with the intention of murder."
Monirul said: “We will complete our investigation before the deadline fixed for us by the lower court and then, the whole truth will be unveiled."
As of Monday, 19 people have been detained in connection with Abrar's murder. Among them, 15 were accused in the case filed over his murder; the rest of them were detained because of their alleged involvement.
Mujahidur Rahman Mujahid, a third-year student of electrical and electronic engineering (EEE) department of Buet; Meftahul Islam Zion, ex-sports secretary; Ifti Mosharraf Sakal, ex-deputy social service secretary, and Anik Sarker, ex-information and research affairs secretary of Buet Chhatra League unit, have given their confessional statements before the a lower court.
Replying to a query about police action after Abrar murder, Monirul said: "Police need permission from the authorities to enter the Buet campus.
“They went to Sher-E-Bangla Hall after 3am. However, they were told that nothing was wrong.”
He added: "After interrogation, we came to know that Abrar had died much earlier."
Abrar Fahad, of the EEE department, was beaten to death inside the university’s Sher-e-Bangla Hall in the early hours of October 7.
Several Chhatra League leaders have been accused of mercilessly torturing him for hours and beating him to death, after accusing him of being involved with Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami.
Later, Abrar's father Barkat Ullah filed a murder case against 19 people with Chawkbazar police station.
The incident sparked mass protests among students of Buet and other universities all across Bangladesh, leading to Buet authorities banning student politics on campus.
