Dhaka University students who have been protesting the affiliation of seven colleges with the university have decided to return to their classes after four days of demonstration.
The authorities concerned have assured them of meeting students' demands.
The students called off the protest a day after the authorities of Dhaka University formed an 11-member committee to resolve the issue of the affiliation of seven colleges.
Dhaka University Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Samad was made the convener of the committee, which was asked to submit recommendations within ten days.
The other members of the committee include Assistant Proctor Dr Muhammad Mainul Karim, deans of the faculties of arts, science and business of Dhaka University, DU teachers’ association president and principal of Dhaka, Eden and Kabi Nazrul colleges, and Vice-President (VP) and General Secretary (GS) of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU).
Meanwhile, welcoming the decision of the university, a spokesperson representing the protesting students, Shakil Miah, said they would go back to classes as soon as possible.
"We appreciate the formation of a committee by the university administration to resolve the issues. We decided to cease all of our programs, including boycotting classes and exams,” he told the media at the base of Aparajeyo Bangla.
He also said of a plan to submit a memorandum to the university chancellor and President of Bangladesh M Abdul Hamid regarding seven affiliated colleges and their demands.
Dhaka University students have been protesting for the cancellation of the affiliation of seven colleges with Dhaka University while boycotting classes and examinations since July 21.
