Watch: Footage of Chhatra League man assaulting two women goes viral

A video clip of a Bangladesh Chhatra League leader assaulting two young women has gone viral on Facebook. In the footage, Mujibur Rahman Anik, president of the Government Bangla College  unit of Chhatra League in Dhaka, and one of his cohorts are seen beating up the women with a rolling pin and a slipper. Contacted, Shuvra Mahmuda, one of the victims, on Friday said that the incident took place on October 24 last year. Anik and seven of his associates brutally assaulted her and her roommate after forcibly entering Shuvra’s rented flat at Darussalam in Mirpur, she added. Shuvra, a student of the college’s English department, alleged that Anik attacked her out of rage as she voiced against assaults on the college’s students and extortion by the Chhatra League leader on and around the campus. The other seven are Sheikh Rashed Rahman, Fayez Ahmed Nijhu, Sadek Pradhania, Masum Reza, Zilen Howladar, Riad Hossain, and Hafiz Howladar. Shuvra, a vice-president of the college unit of Chhatra League, said she had lodged a case with Darussalam police station after the incident. “After I filed a complaint, Chhatra League removed Anik from his post and expelled him from the organization. But, after some days, everybody pinned the blame on me and started raising questions about my moral character. They did not even want to believe that Anik had assaulted me,” said Shuvra. “As I somehow managed to collect a video clip of the incident, I uploaded and shared it on Facebook as a proof and also to clear up the growing misunderstandings over the attack.” She also accused Anik and his men of sexually harassing her on several occasions. Following the October 24 incident, Anik was expelled from the Awami League student organization. He was, however, reinstated in the post early this month, according to college sources. Asked about the footage, the Chhatra League leader remained quiet. “She is a bad girl. She filed five ‘false’ cases against leaders and activists of our organization [Chhatra League] only to extort money. And this is her business,” he alleged. Asked whether taking the law into one’s own hands is allowed and legal, Anik avoided answering the question and said: “She was arrested and served time in a case.” Md Salimuzzaman, officer-in-charge of Darussalam police station, said they were investigating the allegations brought against Anik. “If the plaintiff does have any footage and wants to give it to us, then we will collect it and take necessary actions,” he added.This article was first published on banglatribune.com
