Western countries alliance on media freedom is encouraged to see the arrest of the alleged killers of journalist Golam Rabbani Nadim.
"We are encouraged to learn that authorities have taken action by arresting the suspected perpetrators of the killing and by initiating legal proceedings," the Media Freedom Coalition (MFC)said in a statement.
Signed by the embassies or high commissions of Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Netherlands, United Kingdom, and United States in Dhaka, the statement said: “We are deeply concerned at the deadly June 15 attack on Golam Rabbani Nadim, the Jamalpur district correspondent of BanglaNews24.com and the Bakshiganj upazila correspondent of Ekattor TV.”
The MFC members offered their sincerest condolences to his family and friends.
"We are encouraged to learn that authorities have taken action by arresting the suspected perpetrators of the killing and by initiating legal proceedings. Journalists play a vital role in asking difficult questions, reporting the facts, and promoting the free flow of ideas,” read the statement.
"The Media Freedom Coalition calls on all in positions of influence in Bangladeshi society to speak up for press freedom, the right of journalists to work without fear of retribution or harm, and the need to hold to account those responsible for attacks on journalists," the statement continued.
Jamalpur court on Wednesday sent six of the 13 people, arrested in the journalist Golam Rabbani Nadim murder case, to jail after their three-day remand period ended.
Those who were sent to jail are Md Kofil Uddin, 55, Md Fazlu Mia, 35, Md Shahid, 40, Md Maqbool, 35, Md Ohiduzzaman, 30, and Zakirul Islam, 35, said state-lawyer Advocate Yusuf Ali.
