Emon is on the run since a case was filed in the incident

Update : 24 Apr 2022, 10:26 PM

Law enforcers on Sunday recognized a Dhaka College student named Emon from the viral video of hacking delivery person Nahid Hossain to death during the New Market clashes on April 19.

The accused is a second-year student of the Department of Bangla, reports Bangla Tribune. Originally from Khulna, he resides in the International Hall of the college.

His phone has been found switched off and his Facebook profile deactivated since the incident.

During the clashes with New Market traders-workers, Emon was hit by a brick in the upper part of his left arm and leg. As seen in pictures and videos, his left arm was tied with a cloth.

In a video widely circulated on social media and in photos, Emon was seen brutally hacking a lifeless Nahid on his back with a long dagger, used by butchers to slaughter cattle.

At one point, another student, who had also tortured Nahid, went close to Emon and stopped him.

Police have found similarities between Emon and the young man in the video.

However, he is on the run since a case was filed over the murder. Police say he is under watch.

The incident that took place on the footpath in front of Nurjahan Super Market around 12:45pm shook all as soon as the photos and the video surfaced on Facebook, with people demanding quick arrest and exemplary punishment of the culprits.

Four cases have been filed over the clashes – two for murder and the two others by police for use of explosives and for sabotage, clashes and obstructing police duty.

At least 50 people including journalists were injured in a series of clashes between the students and shop owners-workers on April 19, following a row the previous night at fast food shops owned by a BNP leader, Moqbul Hossain.

Police arrested Moqbul on Friday for instigating the violence.

‘Two students in custody’

Detectives and students on Sunday afternoon said that two students of the college were taken into custody in connection with the attack on Nahid.

The duo are among the four students, including Emon, whose photos were circulated in the last few days on social media and newspapers.

The others named by investigators are Kaiyum, Shaheen Sadek Mirza and Kauser Hamid.

Detectives say they have identified several other students who took part in the attack on that day with locally-made weapons and wearing helmets. Some traders and workers were in helmets as well.

An official of the Detective Branch of police asking not to be named said that four groups of Chhatra League activists had taken part in the protest against New Market traders on Tuesday morning which turned into a violent clash.
