Md Rajib, 20, was alone when he tried to snatch the handbag of Aklima Begum which eventually resulted in the death of her seven-month-old son Arafat on December 18.
The eyewitness of the incident, Abdul Mannan, 48, gave his statement before a Dhaka court on Sunday.
Mannan, in his two-page statement submitted before the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Debabrata Bishwas, said the incident took place in front of him.
Meanwhile, the alleged mugger Rajib gave a confessional statement under section 164 of Criminal Procedure Code before the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sharafujjaman Ansari on Sunday, confirmed by Sub Inspector Rezaul Karim, general recording officer of Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court.
Rajib confessed to his involvement in the mugging. The court sent him to jail after recording the statement.

Earlier in the day, Jatrabari Police arrested Rajib in connection with the case filed over the death of Arafat during a mugging attempt in Dhaka, confirmed Jatrabari police station OC Aminul Islam.
Aminul said: “Acting on a tip-off, a team from Jatrabari police station conducted a drive in Doyaganj area around 1:30am and nabbed Rajib. During the primary interrogation, Rajib confessed to his involvement in the mugging that left the infant dead on the spot.”
“Rajib also confessed that he was involved in other mugging incidents in Dhaka and nearby areas,” Aminul added.
On December 18, seven-month-old Arafat died after falling from a moving rickshaw during a mugging attempt in Doyaganj area. Arafat, son of Shah Alam Gazi from Shariatpur district, was on his mother Aklima Begum’s lap when the incident took place. He fell when the muggers tried to snatch his mother’s handbag.
Following the incident, the father Shah Alam lodged a case with Jatrabari police station accusing unidentified persons, while police started conducting drives to nab the muggers who were behind the heartbreaking incident.
