Mobile courts can operate till October 10

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has extended a stay till October 10 on a High Court order that declared the mobile court conducted by executive magistrates illegal and contradictory to the Constitution. A six-member bench headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha passed the order on Wednesday morning. On May 11, the High Court issued the order declaring the mobile court conducted by executive magistrates illegal and contradictory to the Constitution. On May 14, the Chamber Judge stayed the High Court order in response to an appeal filed by the government till May 18. On May 21, the apex court adjourned the verdict of the High Court till July 2. The Supreme Court on July 4 extended its earlier order for two weeks staying the High Court verdict. On July 18, the court extended its order for two more weeks. Later, the apex court extended two weeks again on August 1. The mobile court ordinance was promulgated in 2007 during the army-backed caretaker government. Later, Awami League-led government passed the Mobile Court Act on October 4, 2009.
