Court orders legal action against 3 police officers including OC in Lakshmipur

They stand accused of torturing a person with disabilities in custody and demanding money for his release

A court in Laxmipur has issued orders to initiate legal proceedings against three police officers, including the officer-in-charge (OC) of Laxmipur Sadar police station.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Tarek Aziz issued the order on Thursday in response to allegations of torture and extortion involving the detainment of a disabled individual at the police station.

The accused individuals, in this case, are Mohammad Mosleh Uddin, the OC of Laxmipur Sadar police station, Inspector Jahirul Alam from the city police outpost and Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Jewel.

The superintendent of Lakshmipur police, Mahfuzzaman Ashraf, was by the court to handle this case, confirmed Bench Assistant Jasim Uddin.

Court Nazir Yasin Arafat said that the court instructed the SP to conduct a thorough investigation within the specified timeframe, as mandated by Section 5(2) and Section 8(1) of the Torture and Custodial Death (Prevention) Act.

According to lawyer Mosaddak Hossain Babar, Delowara Begum, the plaintiff and mother of Arif Hossain, who was held in custody, alleged that the accused individuals subjected her son to cruel and inhumane torture. They further demanded Tk70,000 for Arif's release.

The court acknowledged the seriousness of the allegation and initiated the legal proceedings.

In the meantime, SP Mahfuzuzzaman Ashraf, tasked to file the case by the court, stated that he was informed of the allegations during the court session but has not yet received any official documents from the court.
