Chhatra League leader, his father sent to jail over looting

Accused hacked and injured three people and looted Tk325,000 and gold ornaments from a microbus

Police on Wednesday arrested a union unit president of Chhatra League in Barguna Sadar Upazila and his father, accused of looting a microbus and injuring three people last month.

Barguna Chief Judicial Magistrate Mahbubur Rahman sent them to jail at noon after the police produced them before it, Court Inspector Kamal Hossain said.

The duo are Fuljhuri Union Chhatra League President Mehedi Hasan Duranto and his father Jahangir Gharami.

On the night of March 19, Duranto and his associates intercepted the microbus carrying businessman Saidur Rahman, his wife, children and relatives in Chhota Gaurichanna area while they were returning home from Kuakata.

The accused hacked and injured three people and looted Tk325,000 and gold ornaments, Barguna Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar and Betagi Circle) Mehedi Hasan said.

The locals rescued them, and first took them to Barguna General Hospital and later to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.

The next day, the victim's family filed the case against Duranto and eight others, including his father Jahangir Gharami. The duo had been absconding since the filing of the case.

They were arrested in a raid from Mannan Hat area of Betagi on Wednesday morning, said police.
